Phi Alpha Zeta Delta Honor Society

In 1996, the Department of Social Work was granted a charter for the Zeta Delta Chapter of Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society.  The primary objective of this honor society is to recognize and encourage superior academic scholarship in social work education and to advance excellence in social work practice.  The mission statement is:  Zeta Delta Phi Alpha is committed to advancing social work knowledge, values, and skills through development of learning and networking opportunities that encourage lifetime education for the generalist social worker.  Phi Alpha is guided by the NASW values and Code of Ethics.

Students must, at a minimum, meet the criteria of the national governing organization.  To be eligible for membership in Zeta Delta Phi Alpha, a student must have:

  1. achieved a sophomore standing;
  2. earned a minimum of 9 semester hours or equivalent in Social Work;
  3. achieved a grade point average of 3.25 or above overall and 3.50 in social work classes;
  4. been duly enrolled in an undergraduate social work or social welfare program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE); and
  5. completed the Phi Alpha application and paid the membership due

The Chapter is administered by student officers, consisting of President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer.  There is a faculty advisor available for consultation and guidance.  Meetings are scheduled at least once per semester.  Students who believe they may be eligible for Zeta Delta Phi Alpha should complete the application form and submit it to the Department Secretary, Zeta Delta Phi Alpha faculty advisor, or the Social Work Department Chair.

Some current activities that the club is involved in include mentoring new social work students and tutoring other students in a variety of topics.  The club is also working toward providing a monthly educational series of topics relevant to work in the field.
