CSU-Pueblo Students of Campus

Social Workers are dedicated to helping diverse individuals, families, groups, and communities to meet basic human needs.  The enhancement of social functioning is using the person in the environment perspective.  Particular attention is given to populations at risk, the services that have been developed to meet their needs, and societal change to achieve a more humane and just society.

The Department of Social Work has been continuously accredited by CSWE since 1982.  The program is committed to promoting social and economic justice through excellence, creativity, and innovation.  A strong knowledge, value and skill base is incorporated into the curriculum.  Curriculum is built to provide a strong base of knowledge, values and skills.  As part of a Hispanic Serving Institution, there is an emphasis on understanding, appreciating, and practicing with the Chicano/Chicana community and other regional populations of the Southwestern United States.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How long will it take?

The bachelor’s degree in social work takes four (4) years to complete.  Some students complete the first two (2) years at a community college then transfer into a university that has an accredited social work program.  Accredited social work programs are given the stamp of approval by the national accrediting body, the Council on Social Work Education.  This stamp of approval guarantees that your education meets the standards of the profession regarding beginning social work practice.

  2. Where can I work?
  3. Social workers are found working with people from pre-conception to death.  We work in hospitals, schools, prisons, mental health facilities, state departments of human services, and even in veterinary offices.

  4. Is there a master's degree?

There is a master’s degree in social work called an MSW. CSU-Pueblo does not offer such a degree at this time. It is a very flexible degree and might be completed in one (1) year if you have a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program and, sometimes, social work practice experience. If you have any other undergraduate degree, it may take as long as two (2) years to complete.
