VERONIKA AFANASSIEVA was born and raised in Novosibirsk. She started playing the violin at the age of seven and studied over the next several years with Arnold Kobyliansky, Alexei Kiselev and Marc Meinbach. Veronika is a founding member of the Veronika String Quartet, which started its career in 1989 under the tutelage of Borodin String Quartet cellist Valentin Berlinsky.  After moving to the U.S., she continued her violin studies with Ralph Evans and Kurt Sassmannshaus. She also studied chamber music with Henry W. Meyer and members of the Fine Arts Quartet.  Since 1999, Veronika has been an artist-in-residence at Colorado State University-Pueblo and at the Pueblo Symphony, where she serves as Concertmaster.

Mary Artmann - Orchestration, Applied Cello, String Techniques, Orchestra

MARY ARTMANN Mary Artmann recently joined the Veronika String Quartet, Artists-in-Residence at Colorado State University-Pueblo. This fall, Ms. Artmann completed a North American tour with Mexican pianist, Teresa Tamez, which included live broadcasts for Radio Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico and for the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society in Ontario, Canada. Ms. Artmann has a private studio in Pueblo and coaches the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony. During the summer season she is on the faculty at the Rocky Ridge Music Center in Estes Park, Colorado and the Hartwick Music Festival in Oneonta, New York.
Ms. Artmann graduated with high distinction from the University of California at Berkeley and received a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California. She completed post-graduate work at Oberlin College Conservatory and Kent State University. Twice, she received the Alfred Hertz Memorial Traveling Fellowship for a year of study with Ronald Leonard in Los Angeles and with Siegfried Palm in Cologne. While in Los Angeles, Ms. Artmann participated in the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestral Training Program.
Ms. Artmann is a champion of new music, and also has an interest in early music. She has performed on Viola da Gamba with the University of Southern California Early Music Ensemble, the Oberlin Consort, and the Buffalo Consort of Viols. She is principal cellist with the Pueblo Symphony and continues to perform with the Buffalo and Rochester Philharmonics. She is a member of the Slee Sinfonietta and the Scandinavian Chamber Orchestra of New York. Her freelance activities have included a European tour with the American Sinfonietta and performance with the Pittsburgh Symphony. She was a member of the Sartory Quartet, in residence at Kent State University, the Syracuse Symphony and Colorado Music Festival Orchestra. She has taught at Mercyhurst College and the Bennington College July Program. Ms. Artmann has recorded for Radio Nuevo Leon, Radio France, WDR, and WBFO's Opus Classics series. Twice, she received grants from the New York State Council of the Arts.

  Betsy Barto - Applied Voice

BETSY BARTO attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta scholastic fraternity; Alpha Delta Pi sorority; Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity; the opera program; the Uarkettes, a musical touring group; and Schola Cantorum, a select choir that spent two month on tour in Europe. She completed a Bachelor of Music Education degree with choral emphasis from the University of North Texas. Ms. Barto taught elementary music for many years in the Garland Independent School District of Texas and was the assistant director of the Garland All-City Boys Choir. In 1990, she earned a Masters of the Art of Teaching degree from the University of Texas at Dallas and her level three Kodaly certification. Ms. Barto also holds classroom certification for grades one through eight and has taught fourth grade. An interesting twist to her educational career was teaching in a one-room schoolhouse that included children at varying grade levels. She felt she was living a chapter of Little House on the Prairie except that it was "little house in the mountains."
Ms. Barto has been active in civic and church musical activities since her teenage years. She has taught private voice and beginning piano and has held the position of choirmaster/organist at three churches. One highlight of her career was singing in the Dallas Symphony Chorus under the direction of Eduarto Mata. She is currently a member of the Pueblo Choral Society and active in the music program at Ascension Episcopal Church. She begins her second year as director of the Apprentice Choir of the Pueblo Children's Chorale and her fourth semester teaching voice at CSU-Pueblo.

  Barbara Beck - Applied Voice, Applied Organ, Vocal Techniques

BARBARA BECK is an artist in residence at CSU-Pueblo, where she teaches applied voice. She has also directed several musicals, one-act operas and opera scenes. She holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in pipe organ as well as a master's degree in vocal pedagogy and performance. She also is a founding member of the Pueblo Children's Chorale for which she serves as vocal coach.

  Ben Cantu - Applied Guitar

BEN CANTÚ, instructor of guitar, received his Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and his Master of Music degree from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music. While at Lamont, Ben studied with such distinguished guitarists as Masakazu Ito, Jonathan Leathwood, and Ricardo Iznaola. Ben has served as Maestro Iznaola’s assistant at the University Denver and at the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival for two years. During the summer of 2004, Mr. Cantú had the honor to participate in a performance of George Crumb’s Night of the Four Moons at the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival. Ben worked with such artists as Christina Jennings, Simone Fontanelli, Anne Crumb, and George Crumb that summer.
Mr. Cantú has performed in many masterclasses and received coachings from such world renowned artists as Paul O’dette, Nigel North, Michael Debost, Simone Fontanelli, and Benjamin Verdrey. Ben has worked with Oberlin’s Wind Ensemble and Finney Ensemble as a guest artist, and his solo career has taken him as far as Shanghai, China where he performed concerts in December of 1999 and January 2000.
Ben has been active as a teacher since 1997. He has served as an assistant to Stephen Aron at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Ricardo Iznaola at the University of Denver; as well as an assistant to the Theory Department at the University of Denver where Ben taught an Aural Skills class. Ben has had private studios in Charleston (S.C.), North Royalton (O.H.), and in Denver (C.O.). Mr. Cantú has been teaching at Colorado State University at Pueblo since 2003.

Jacob Chi   Dr. Jacob Chi - Music History, Conducting, Orchestra

The 2007-2008 season celebrates Dr. Jacob Chi’s 14th season as the Music Director and Conductor for the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1929.  Under his innovative, artistic, and passionate direction, the Pueblo Symphony reaches new peaks at each season for that last 13 years.  Over the years, Dr. Chi and the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra have accumulatively reached more than 200,000 live audiences, in addition to countless broadcasting audiences. 

Jacob Chi was born in Qingdao, China.  At age 17, he became the youngest Concertmaster of the Beijing Opera in Qingdao; at 23, he was the Company’s conductor and composer.  In 1987, Chi received his Master of Music in Violin Performance at the University of Michigan under Jacob Krachmalnick, former concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra.  In 1996, he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestra Conducting under Leon Gregorian at Michigan State University.  Chi studied with Maestro Gustov Meier at the University of Michigan, the Tanglewood Music Center, and an International Conducting Workshop in Sofia, Bulgaria.  He also attended various conducting master classes with Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Slatkin, and John Nelson.  In the summer of 2006, Dr. Chi instructed in the International Conducting Workshop with Maestro Gustov Meier and Dr. Ben Loeb in Chihuahua, Mexico.  Chi was the Music Director of the Chihuahua State Philharmonic from 2005 to 2007.

Dr. Chi is a committed music educator – well respected, and a beloved professor.  His academic appointments include Miami University at Oxford Ohio (1993-1997), University of Southern Colorado (1991-1993), and, currently, Colorado State University–Pueblo (1997+, Professor of Music).  Dr. Chi also teaches conducting at universities and conservatories in China and Mexico.  Maestro Chi guest conducts nationally and internationally.  He had conducted the Denver Symphony (Colorado), Colorado Springs Symphony (Colorado), Taos Symphony (New Mexico), Jackson Symphony (Michigan), and Midland Symphony (Michigan).  Internationally, he conducted Vladimir State Symphony Orchestra (Vladimir, Russia), Michoacan State Symphony Orchestra (Morelia, Mexico), Echternach International Festival (Luxembourg) – where he shared the stage with George Solti, Gil Shaham and other international celebrities, Festival International Chihuahua (Chihuahua, Mexico), Chihuahua University Symphony Orchestra (Chihuahua, Mexico), New Symphony Orchestra (Sofia, Bulgaria), and Hua-ou Philharmonic (Qingdao, China) – where he is distinguished as the principal guest conductor and the artistic advisor.  His conducting repertoire ranges from symphonic music, ballet and opera to Jazz, country western, rock ’n roll, and Broadway musicals – from the 17th to the 20th century, from the Orient to the West.

By virtue of his significant professional contributions to American society in 1994, Chi was selected among thirteen other Asian conductors, along with Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta, and Bright Sheng, for the Premiere Edition of Who’s Who Among Asian Americans.  In 2000, he was listed in the 17th edition of the International Who’s Who in Music and the Musicians Directory.

Dr. Chi and his wife, Dr. Lin Chang – a statistical researcher –, have two children: a son, Julius, age 11 and a daughter, Juliet, age 6.

  Rick Crafts - Applied Low Brass

RICK CRAFTS was born and raised in Bellefonte, PA and began playing trombone at the age of twelve.  Before he graduated from high school he was playing professional gigs and when he was a senior, he played lead trombone for the Penn State University Jazz Ensemble.  After high school graduation in 1965, he attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA and had the opportunity to study with a legend, Matty Shiner.  While at Duquesne, he was most proud of performing all four years with the Duquesne University Brass Ensemble, founded and directed by his teacher, Matty Shiner. Upon graduation, he auditioned and was accepted for the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs. After Army boot camp, he spent the next four years as lead trombonist for the NORAD Commanders Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band. During those four years they toured all over the United States and Canada and made many recordings. Rick then switched services and spent the next 22 years from 1974 to 1996 in the Air Force Academy Band/Band of the Rockies.  He spent most of his time playing lead/solo trombone in the Falconaires Jazz Ensemble, but also performed with the Concert Band and the Marching Band.  From 1980-1984, he had the honor of serving as the leader of the Falconaires.  In addition to performing hundreds of public concerts with all these groups, the Falconaires played many jazz festivals including Wichita State University, University of Northern Colorado and The National Association of Jazz Educators. At these venues, the Falconaires had the opportunity to perform and clinic with The Four Freshman, Louis Bellson, Ed Shaugnessy, Diane Shurr, Walt Levinsky, Frank Mantooth, Marv Stamm, Rich Matteson, Tony Williams and Jamey Aebersold. Rick can be heard on two Falconaire recordings, “Jazz from the Rockies” and “Thanks for the Memories”. Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1996, he ventured into his new role as freelance musician. He substitutes regularly with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and the Pueblo Symphony.  Rick is currently Low Brass Instructor at Colorado State University-Pueblo as Artist-In-Residence.   He is the house trombonist for the Fine Arts Center Repertory Theater Productions and is a member of the Springs Contemporary Jazz Big Band. He has also performed with such notable groups as The Temptations, Jimmy Dorsey, Bill Tole, The U.S. Air Force “Airmen of Note”, Frank Fanelli and Al Eberhardt. In addition to working with many different groups along the Front Range, he and his wife enjoy booking their own group, “The Springs City Jazz Band”.

  Greg Creager - Applied Piano

GREGORY CREAGER began serious musical study with Frank Cedrone, in whose loving memory he continues to perform and teach professionally.  Mr. Creager continued on with Mr. Cedrone until around the age of 18.  After high school, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College, studying with Sue Grace, and then proceeded to earn a Master of Music degree in piano performance from Dr. William Leland at New Mexico State University.  To date, Mr. Creager's education has culminated at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna, Austria, where he received instruction from the Czech pianist Branko Czuberka.
Mr. Creager continues to be active as a church accompanist and he performs regularly as a soloist at private parties and other special occasions.  He has given many performances at the Pueblo Country Club, as well as at the Timbers Restaurant in Cuchara, Colorado.  This is his fourth year at CSU-Pueblo, where he continues on as an adjunct piano instructor.  Right up until the time of Mr. Cedrone's death, he and Mr. Creager maintained a very close professional correspondence.

Jason Crowe   Jason Crowe - Applied Bass

Well traveled both geographically and musically, bassist/composer JASON CROWE has had the good fortune to make great music around the globe with a variety of artists in many different genres of music. Born in Vancouver, WA. on March 21st 1971 Jason started playing the Bass in high school during which time he attended Prairie High School in Brush Prairie, Washington.  After high school he attended Eastern Washington University where he studied classical Bass with Roma Vayspapir and started working with the top local jazz musicians, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience.  In 1994 Jason joined the 560th Air National Guard Band located at Fairchild AFB in Spokane WA. Three years later Jason joined the Air Force Band program and was stationed at Robins AFB in Warner Robins, GA.  During this time he continued to hone his craft and performed with many major recording artists in a variety of musical genres.  Highlights include performances with Marvin Stamn, Ernie Watts, Micheal Abene, Crystal Gayle, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Faith Hill, Wynona Judd, Celline Dion, and CeCe Winans.  Jason also was a founding member of the jazz group Inside/Out that released one album and played throughout the Southeastern Untied States.  Also during this time he met his wife Megan and they were soon married on St. Georges Island Florida.   Two years later their daughter Molly was born nearby in Macon, GA.  After seven years in Georgia Jason was reassigned to the Air Force Band in Europe located at Sembach, AB GE.  Tours included trips across Europe including an appearance by the Air Force Band Check Six as a headliner at the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland.  The Band also toured Bosnia and brought American good will to the people of Russia when the Band toured the Ural Mountain region of Russia in 2005.  Jason was also highly respected by the local German musicians who all enjoyed playing with his great feel and musicality.   During his time in Germany Jason also performed with Jiggs Whigham, John Popper and the Country vocal group Restless Heart.  Of all the great performances that Jason had in Europe the one that was most satisfying was a fundraiser concert in the village where he and his family lived.  The village was called Fischbach, GE. and the fundraiser was for the local German kindergarten Molly attended.  The concert raised over 500 Euros and the experience of playing for his German neighbors was a life defining moment.  2005 brought many opportunities to Jason when he was offered the job with the United States Air Force Academy Band playing with the Concert Band and the Falconairies.  In 2006 he and his family relocated to Colorado Springs, CO. from their assignment with the United States Air Forces in Europe Band. As a member of the Academy Band, one of two premier musical organizations in the Air Force music program, Jason has been part of many great projects including the recent Falconaires recording of the music of Sammy Nestico. This also included Concerts with Sammy directing the Falconaires. Jason also performed with a trio consisting of drummer Henrique DeAlmeida and guitarist Stephen Brannen.  In addition to playing with this absolutely phenomenal jazz trio, the group also played many of Jason’s compositions and arrangements.  Outside of the Air Force many of Colorado Springs top local musician’s call on Jason to perform with them.  Having a large repertoire of standards, good ears, strong versatility, and top notch sight reading abilities makes Jason a great sub for any gig. Jason also is a regular performer with the Contemporary praise and worship Band at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs.  In addition, Jason can be found around town occasionally filling in with local groups including Alan Joseph, Brad Bietry, Brad Eastin, and Bruce Pennington. A highly creative musician with a natural ability for swing and groove Jason is highly admired by his fellow musicians, especially drummers who appreciate his great feel.  Gifted with a virtuoso technique and beautiful singing tone Jason is a musician’s musician and always brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to any project he is involved in.   Jason Crowe is currently the Instructor of String Bass at CSU-Pueblo.

  Mike De Luca - Music Theory, Music Appreciation, Woodwind Techniques, and Music Education

MIKE DE LUCA, Artist in Residence for the CSU-Pueblo Department of Music, is a native of Pueblo, Colorado, and currently teaches classes in Music Theory, Music Appreciation, Woodwind Instrument Techniques, and Secondary Teaching Methods. In addition, he supervises instrumental music student teachers for the CSU-Pueblo Department of Education. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education from the University of Colorado with an emphasis in woodwind instrument techniques. He received his Master’s of Arts Degree from the University of Colorado in Educational Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Educational Leadership. He taught instrumental music for Pueblo School District 60 for 25 years and worked in school administration as the “Director of Visual and Performing Arts” for his last five years in public education. During his tenure as a teacher he received the prestigious “Colorado Teacher of the Year” award, “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” award, and the American School Band Directors Association’s “Stanbury Award” for both the state of Colorado and the Southwestern United States region. He is a current member of the Colorado Music Educator’s Association, Phi Beta Mu Honorary Music Fraternity, and the Colorado Association of Music Curriculum Specialists.

  Ekaterina Dobrotvorskaia - Applied Viola, Functional Piano, Orchestra

EKATERINA DOBROTVORSKAIA was born in the old Russian town Vladimir in the family of musicians. She started playing violin in the age of six, and in the age of eleven she was accepted in Central Music School with Moscow State Conservatory for musically gifted children. In 1993 Ekaterina graduated from Central Music School as violist and passed examinations to Moscow State Conservatory. She graduated from the Conservatory in 1998 with the master degree in music performance, music pedagogy, soloist of orchestra and chamber music. She studied viola with Galina Vakhromeeva- Odinetz, one of the leading viola professors in Moscow and string quartet with Alexander Korchagin of the Shostakovich String Quartet. Ekaterina has received numerous scholarship awards from various master classes in Russia and abroad, and from Moscow State Conservatory.
While studying, Ekaterina have had an active performing career. She toured extensively in Australia, Israel, Cyprus, Switzerland, France and Germany.
Ekaterina has performed as soloist and also as violist of Tempera String Quartet.
Tempera String Quartet was one of the best string quartets chosen from all over the world to go to Australia and compete in Melbourne. In Moscow Ekaterina performed with chamber groups Amadeus and Moscovia. She also served as a principal violist of Russian Philharmonia symphony orchestra.
At the present time Ekaterina is working on her D.M.A. in music performance specializing as a solo violist at the Moscow State Conservatory.
Since November of 2000, when she joined the Veronika String Quartet, Ekaterina is an artist-in-residence at the Colorado State University – Pueblo and a Principal Violist of the Pueblo Symphony. Ekaterina has also appeared in many chamber performances joining local musicians, as well as playing solo.

JAMES DUNCAN is a graduate of Central Methodist College (Missouri) and the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. In addition he has done graduate study at the Teachers College of Columbia University in New York. He numbers among his teachers: N. Louise Wright, Ellsworth MacLeod, the Cuban virtuoso Jose Echaniz, Johanna Harris and Rosina Lhevinne. In 1964 he did a lecture on American Music at the Gymnasium in Lubeck, Germany, and a recital at the Hotel Germania in Bad Scwartau. In 1986 he performed with Kent Holliday a Duet Recital at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City; and in 1994 he directed three Master Classes in Seoul, Korea. For twelve years he was Music Critic for the Pueblo Chieftain and the Pueblo Star-Journal.
In demand as an adjudicator in piano, Mr. Duncan has judged in Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, California, South Dakota, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, and New York state. In 1985 he judged for five weeks in New York at Carnegie Hall. He has co-authored a text on music theory published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston and has written several magazine articles on piano and piano ensemble. Mr. Duncan is a former Province Governor of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He is an active member of the Music Teachers National Association and a past president of the Colorado State Music Teachers Association. He is currently Professor of Music at Colorado State University - Pueblo, where he teaches piano, piano ensemble and courses in Music Theory.

Brad Eastin - Jazz Ensembles, Applied Woodwinds

ORIGINALLY FROM Melbourne Florida, Brad Eastin has lived in Colorado Springs since 1985.  He was awarded a Masters in Music from The University of South Florida in 1979.  Working as a professional musician in the Tampa Bay area, he performed on Tenor and Soprano Saxophone as well as Flute for four years with The Dick Rivers Group.  He also worked with Frankie Lane, Cab Calloway, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Gorshin and James Darrin as well as performing at the Kool Jazz Festival in Orlando Florida in 1982.  He joined the US Air Force Band at Robins AFB Georgia in 1983.  He moved to Colorado Springs in 1985 after auditioning and winning a position at USAF Academy Band.  He became a member of the premier Jazz Ensemble of The USAF Academy Band “The Falconaires” playing with Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Ed Shaunessey, Louie Belson, Jon Hendricks and Diane Schurr.  During this period the Falconaires performed at the Wichita, UNC Greeley and Fullerton College Jazz Festivals.  They were also invited to play at International Association of Jazz Educators Convention as well a Music-Fest Canada.  In 1996 Brad became leader of USAF Band of The Rockies group “Blue Steel” designing and implementing a “Stay in School Show” aimed at high school and middle school students.  He produced this show for over 124,000 students nation-wide.  He retired from the USAF Band of the Rockies in August of 2003.  Brad continues to perform in the Colorado Front Range area with his own group EastinWest, The Colorado Springs Contemporary Big Band and other Colorado Springs, Denver and National artists and recently performed with the Temptations at the Pepsi Center in Denver.  EastinWest released their self‑produced CD "The Great Front Range" in 1997 which was chosen by Musicland as Colorado’s #1 Independent Jazz Recording for that year.

  Al Eberhardt - Jazz Ensembles, Brass Techniques, Music Appreciation, Applied Trumpet, Brass Ensemble

AL EBERHARDT has been described as one of the most versatile trumpeters in the United States. During his distinguished career he has had the opportunity to perform with many of America's greatest stars including legendary singers Sinatra, Jack Jones and the Four Freshmen, comedians Bob Hope, Bill Cosby, Steve Allen and Bob Newhart, jazz greats Johnny Smith, Bill Watrous, Pete Fountain, Carl "Doc" Severinsen, Herbie Mann, Frank Mantooth and Bobby Shew. Al has also performed with pop icons like Lou Cristy, The Crystals, Frankie Valli, James Brown, Wayne Newton, The Beach Boys and Las Vegas star Danny Gans. He has also backed up country stars Jack Jones and guitarist Chet Atkins. Pianist Roger Williams describes him as "A Great Talent". Al's commercial dance/jazz band known as "The Changing Times" is one of Colorado's most popular variety groups and typically does many performances annually. His recently formed Jazz educator group called “The Visiting Professors Jazz Band” is also gaining great popularity in k-12 environments. Al remains busy as an adjudicator, clinician, and composer of trumpet and brass pedagogy aids. His system of warm ups and range builders have been used by many successful players and educators from coast to coast. Al is currently the Principal trumpet of the Pueblo Symphony. Al attributes his success to great teaching from his mentors Jean Chard of the St. Louis Symphony and Professor James Whitlow of the University of New Mexico as well as insights gained from sessions with David Hickman, Bobby Shew and Maurice Andre. Al’s military career experience as principal trumpet and soloist with the prestigious NORAD Band and various United States Air Force Academy Band units including the Concert Band and Falconaires, and as leader of the Brass Quintet and Blue Steel Rock Band. He considers his selection as a Cramer Foundation Award winner and command performances for four U.S. Presidents as career highlights before he became a college educator. Al Eberhardt is now very busy in his role as an Artist in Residence at the beautiful Colorado State University Campus located in Pueblo, Colorado. Lately, his university jazz ensembles have been receiving rave reviews and some students are being called to perform on professional gigs with top entertainers including the “Temptations”. Al was selected to direct the 2007 Colorado All State Jazz Ensemble at the Colorado Music Educators Conference at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. The All State Jazz Ensemble performed one of his original Latin jazz compositions at this function. Al can be heard on three “Changing Times” CD albums as well as many military band albums and on countless jingle recordings.

  Karine Garibova - Applied Violin, Functional Piano, Orchestra

KARINE GARIBOVA was born and raised in Moscow. At the age of five she started playing piano. She started playing violin at the age of six, when Karine was accepted at the Gnesin’s Moscow Special Music School studying with Irina Svetlova and Helen Mazor. In 1985 she was accepted to Gnessin’s Academy of Music, where she studied with Khalida Akhtyamova. In school and college Karine has shown a great interest in chamber music. As a teenager she participated in the Concertino Prague Festival. During her college years her group won a first prize in Russian National competition of student string quartets.
While in the US Karine has studied violin with Efim Boico and Peter Miliawsky. She studied chamber music with Henry W. Meyer, Fine Arts Quartet and Valentin Berlinsky.
Karine is the founding member of the Veronika String Quartet, which started its career in 1989.
Since 1999, Karine has been an artist-in-residence at the Colorado State University – Pueblo, formerly the University of Southern Colorado, and at the Pueblo Symphony, where she serves as Principal of Second Violins. Since 2000 Karine is also playing with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, where she became an Associate Principal Second Violins in 2004.
Karine enjoys teaching very much. She maintains her private studios in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. She is also coaching a student string quartet at Young Peoples Orchestra in Colorado Springs.
Karine is also performing outside of the Veronika String Quartet. She participated in a Lawrence Leighton Smith and Esteemed Friends recital in Colorado Springs. Karine is particularly interested in performing of new music, and enjoys working with living composers. Her most recent work is a recording of the Dinner Music of Charles Eakin with pianist Juanita DeHeart. Karine is also planning to record a Sonata for violin solo of the composer.

DINA HOLLINGSWORTH has been playing the flute professionally for 22 years.  She studied under Frank Bowen at the University of New Mexico, and then spent one year in England with internationally known flutist, Trevor Wye.  Her performance career has taken her throughout the southwest and has featured her abilities to play classical, jazz, big band, latin, and contemporary music.  Dina has been teaching both privately and within public school systems since she was 18 years old.  She continues to keep up her own studies through master classes with many different people; in the past, this has included Julius Baker, Keith Underwood, and Robert Dick.  More recently, she takes a yearly master class with Trevor Wye in Albuquerque and will be going back to England this year for a chamber music class with pianist Clifford Benson.

DR.
MARK E. HUDSON is currently Chair of the Department of Music at Colorado State University - Pueblo. Dr. Hudson has been active as a conductor, singer, horn player, and music educator
since 1981, and as a musician and performer since his youth.  Dr. Hudson holds the Master of Music in Conducting and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Music Education with an emphasis in conducting from the University of Florida, and the Bachelor of
Arts in Music Education from Harding University. While at the University of Florida, he served as a graduate teaching assistant for the Department of Music.
Prior to taking the position at Colorado State University - Pueblo, Dr. Hudson served as Chair of the Department of Music at Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina. While at Limestone, Dr. Hudson was Director of Bands, taught conducting and trained future music educators, and was active as a guest conductor and clinician in the public schools of the Carolinas as well as elsewhere in the Southeast. During this period, he also served as conductor of the Spartanburg Community Band and the Limestone College Community Chorus.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Dr. Hudson returned to the public schools in Florida as Director of Bands and Choral Activities at Santa Fe High School. While in this position, he began his graduate work, and subsequently taught at Buchholz High School as Director of Choral Activities and Fort Clarke Middle School as Director of Bands. In all, he taught in the public schools of Florida for 15 years before returning to Harding University as a member of the music faculty and Assistant Director of Bands in 1992.
Besides his extensive conducting experience, Dr. Hudson enjoys performing on horn and as a baritone, preferring jazz as a means of vocal musical expression. He serves as Conductor and Artistic Director of the Pueblo Choral Society, Conductor and Artistic Director of the Pikes Peak Philharmonic, and as conductor of the Southern Colorado Wind Symphony. Dr. Hudson is also a member of Rotary, Leadership Pueblo and its steering committee, and serves on various other boards in the Pueblo area.

DR. DANA IHM received the Doctor of Philosophy in Choral Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina, having studied conducting with Dr. Larry Wyatt.  Here Master of Music in Choral Conducting Performance and Bachelor of Choral Music Education were from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas, where she studied voice with Margaret Theuneman and conducting with Dr. Marshall Turley.
Her academic appointments include Ozark Christian College (Voice, Piano, Theory Instructor; 1984-1987); Brodhead Public Schools (Choral Director grades 5-12, 1988-1990); Dallas Christian College (Professor of Voice and Choral Music, Department Chair, 1993-2003); Colorado State University-Pueblo (Choral Director, 2003+).
Dr. Ihm is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association.  She has auditioned for and participated in the Carnegie Hall Professional Choral Workshop in 2000 and 2002, singing under the direction of John Conlan and Andre Previn.  She has been actively involved in directing numerous church and community choirs throughout her career.  She has also adjudicated numerous choral and vocal competitions and festivals in Texas and Oklahoma.

  Victoria Markowski - Applied Piano

VICTORIA MARKOWSKI joined the faculty of Southern Colorado State College as Artist in Residence in 1969. She retired in 1999 and continues to serve as Adjunct Professor.
She was part of the piano team Markowski and Cedrone. This team won the Concert Artists' Guild Award which resulted in a New York City debut at Carnegie Recital Hall and led to 1000 performances throughout the US. Their CD 'Two-Piano Magic' was released in 1999.
She was awarded the Outstanding Woman Faculty Award, the Outstanding Faculty Award and the Hawaii American Piano Competition Silver Medal. She holds National Certification from Music Teachers National Association and is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory.

Alan Mills   Dr. Alan Mills- Director of Bands

Alan W. Mills was appointed Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Colorado State University-Pueblo in the summer of 2008.  His duties include conducting the Wind Ensemble, directing the Thunderwolf Marching Band, overseeing the development of the concert band and athletic band programs, and teaching various music education courses including conducting, music teacher training, music technology, and marching band techniques.  Prior to joining the CSU-Pueblo faculty, he served as the Associate Director of Bands at Texas A&M University-Commerce where his responsibilities included conducting the Symphonic Band, serving as Director of the Pride Marching Band, and teaching courses in conducting, music education, music technology, and jazz history.   Originally from Minnetonka, Minnesota, Mills previously taught middle school and high school band in the public schools of Colorado and Wyoming. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota-Morris in Instrumental Music Education with performance majors in applied piano and applied trumpet, the Master of Music Education degree from The University of Colorado, the Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Arizona, and is a Candidate (ABD) for the Doctor of Philosophy in Wind Conducting and Music Education at Florida State University. His conducting teachers include Richard Clary, André J. Thomas, Alexander Jiménez, Gregg Hanson, James Carlson, and Ken Hodgson and his music education mentors include Clifford Madsen, Patrick Dunnigan, John Geringer, and Vicki Lind. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mills is in the process of establishing a cumulative document on the life and career of James E. Croft, Director of Bands, Emeritus at Florida State University. He has presented research lectures at United States state music education association conferences in Colorado and Wyoming and his scholarly writing can be found in the Journal of Band Research and Teaching Music Through Performance In Band. Mills has served as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator in Texas, Florida, and Beijing, China and he toured the United States and Europe for a year as an instrumentalist with the international educational group Up With People. Mills is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Colorado Music Educators Association.  He has also been elected a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi, and has been granted honorary membership in Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma.
 

  Jennifer Shadle-Peters - Music Education

JENNIFER SHADLE-PETERS directs the Music Education degree program and advises students who are majoring in music education. She teaches music methods courses, supervises student teachers, and maintains an active liaison with music teachers in Pueblo and nearby school districts. Dr. Shadle-Peters earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degrees from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, and her Ph.D. from Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri. She taught general and choral music in Texas and Illinois before turning her attention to teaching at the collegiate level, where she has specialized in applied vocal music and music education. She joined the faculty of Colorado State University-Pueblo in August 2005, having taught for eleven years at McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois. Her research interests lie in the intersecting issues of language, music, and education. Hobbies and special interests include bicycling, hiking, textile arts, and the study of languages.   Nola Reid - Applied Voice

NOLA REID has been a distinguished educator and performer in the Pueblo area for many years. She received her B.A. (Cum Laude) in Music Education from Adams State College in Alamosa and her M.M. in Choral Conducting from Colorado State University-Fort Collins.
She is currently director of the Chancel Choir at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Pueblo and Accompanist/Cantor with St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church in Pueblo West. She was an educator in the Pueblo School District 60 system for 23 years, culminating as Department Chairperson and Director of Choral Activities at Pueblo South High School. Her prior service includes Director of Music Ministries at the Shrine of St. Therese, Director of The Pueblo Community Chorale at Pueblo Community College, and Assistant Conductor of the Pueblo Symphony Chorale conducted by Gerhard Track. She was also choreographer for District 60 Summer Musicals for many years.
Her many awards include the Distinguished Alumnus Award in Music from Colorado State University-Ft. Collins; Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 1992; Governor’s Honorary Citation in 1991 from Governor Roy Romer; Outstanding Achievement in Arts Award-1990 Celebration of Women; and Miss Colorado in the Miss America Scholarship Competition, 1957.

Todd Sizer - Applied Tuba and Euphonium

TODD SIZER a native of Burke, VA, received his Bachelors of Music Education from Indiana University. While at Indiana, he was awarded the William Bell Scholarship for meritorious achievements in the study of tuba performance. Upon graduation, Todd won a position with the United States Air Force Academy Band in Colorado Springs, CO. He spent over 8 years performing across the nation, including performances at music educator conferences and countless colleges and universities. An incredibly versatile performer, Todd played with more groups than any other member of the Academy Band and performed for national audiences as a tubist, bassist, guitarist, and vocalist. During his time in the Air Force, he was musical director for a popular/rock group and a prolific arranger and composer, contributing many works for several different ensembles. Todd is an active freelance musician and has performed as principal tubist with the Colorado Springs Symphony, Terre Haute Symphony, Columbus (IN) Philharmonic, the Rocky Mountain Opera Company, Harvey Phillips’ Tuba Company, the Columbus Brass Quintet, and many other ensembles. As an electric bassist, Todd has performed with jazz, rock/pop and church groups, as well as artists Bill Watrous, the Ken Miller Trio, Undercover, Bighorn, and the Brazilian Jazz Project. Todd joined the CSU-Pueblo faculty as an Artist-in-Residence in the fall of 2006 where he teaches courses in Music Technology, Orchestration/Arranging, as well as applied lessons for Tuba and Euphonium. He is also on faculty at Colorado College as the Instructor of Bass Guitar. Todd has been fortunate to study with great brass players and educators including Daniel Perantoni (Indiana University, solo artist), Gene Pokorny (Chicago Symphony), Warren Deck (New York Philharmonic), Sam Pilafian (Empire Brass, Arizona State University), Fritz Kaenzig (University of Michigan), William David Porter II (United States Air Force Band), Scott Hartman (Empire Brass), Michael Mulcahy (Chicago Symphony), and David Burns (Indiana University, solo artist). Todd is happily married to his wife Cheryl, a flautist in the United States Air Force Academy Band, and has three wonderful children.

  Aaron Turner - Applied Percussion, Music Appreciation, Percussion Techniques, Percussion Ensemble

AARON TURNER, a native of Wisconsin, currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As a percussionist, he has performed with the Dayton Philharmonic, the United States Air Force Band of Flight, Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, and is currently Principal Percussionist with the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra. He has performed on drumset with Frank Mantooth, John Thuline, Randy Sabien, and Matt Turner.
He holds a Bachelor of Music from Lawrence University in percussion performance and a Master of Music from the University of North Texas in percussion performance with a jazz studies emphasis. His primary teachers include Dane Richeson, Ed Soph, Robert Shietroma, Ron Fink, Shee Wu, and Tele Lesbines. Aaron has recorded with the North Texas Wind Symphony, Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble, and Lawrence University Percussion Ensemble.
Aaron is also active as a music educator. Besides teaching at CSU-Pueblo, he is the percussion instructor at Lewis-Palmer High School in Monument, Colorado, and is on the faculty at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado.

The VERONIKA STRING QUARTET was formed in 1989 while the members were studying at the Gnesins’ Russian Academy of Music in Moscow, Russia. The members of the Quartet are: Veronika Afanassieva and Karine Garibova, violins; Ekaterina Dobrotvorskaia, viola; and Mary Artmann, cello. Veronika and Karine are original members of the Quartet and Ekaterina joined in 2000. Mary is newest member of the group; she joined the Quartet in fall of 2006.
The Veronika String Quartet has been awarded top prizes in international competitions in Russia, Australia and in the United States in 1990, 1991, 1995 and 1996. They have collaborated in performances with the Fine Arts Quartet, Martin Lovett (formerly of the Amadeus Quartet), clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and pianists James Tocco and Ruth Laredo. The Quartet has performed in France, Germany, Holland, Spain, England, Switzerland and Israel and has toured extensively in Russia and the United States.
The repertoire of the Veronika String Quartet ranges from Haydn and Beethoven to twentieth century works. The Quartet has recorded with the Warner Brothers, Narada and Northword Press Labels.
Since 1992, the Veronika String Quartet has received numerous scholarship awards from music schools throughout the United States, such as the University of Milwaukee – Wisconsin’s Institute of Chamber Music, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the College – Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Quartet has been coached Valentin Berlinsky, cellist of the Borodin Quartet, by the Fine Arts Quartet, and Henry W. Meyer, violinist of the LaSalle Quartet.
Since 1999, the Veronika String Quartet has been in residence at Colorado State University – Pueblo, and serving as principal players of the Pueblo Symphony.
