After graduating from USC in 1982, I immediately went to work as an
advertising sales account representative for The Pueblo Chieftain
newspaper in Pueblo. I sold ads and created the copy and layout for
approximately 50 clients per week.
After eight years at the newspaper, I accepted a position with Bonfils
Blood Center as a recruitment specialist. It was the first blood center
that Bonfils opened outside of metropolitan Denver, and I was responsible
for recruiting of blood donors, blood drives, public speaking engagements,
volunteers, advertising, promotions and special events.
In 1993, Bob Gentry, and I started Gentry, Jones & Associates. We
are the only firm in the Pueblo area that specializes in working with
non-profit organizations. We also serve a broad range of other types
of businesses as well. Our diversified list of clients includes the
Colorado Department of Transportation, funeral homes, an eye care
center, candle shop, cemetery, Sangre de Cristo Hospice, Miss Rodeo
America and many others.
Four years ago, I co-developed and teach a course with Jennifer Mullen
called "Non-Profit Organization and Communications." Classes offer
a well-rounded look at how non-profit organizations function and I
love teaching the class on fund-raising.
I like fund-raising so much that recently I published a book geared
toward helping schools, churches and non-profit organizations who
need to raise money. "Beyond Bake Sales...A Guide to Special Event
Fund-raising" offers step-by-step suggestions on how to host a fund-raising
event. Additionally, the book includes more than 150 ideas for such
events.
For the past two years, I have been the advertising adviser for The
USC Today newspaper at the Colorado State University - Pueblo.
I really enjoy working with the students each week. (A year's subscription
is only $20, mailed to your home or office, and money from subscriptions
benefits the newspaper).
This fall I look forward to teaching Trish Orman's advertising classes
when she takes a sabbatical in order to finish her doctorate.
I enjoyed my years at USC and look forward to hearing from former
classmates and alums. I'd love to hear what everyone is doing now
and to catch up on old times...fun times we shared together.
