Green, Lenamay (1869-1952)


Brief Biography:
Lenamay Green graduated from Columbia Athenaeum, a school for girls, in Maury County, TN. The trip she made at the age of eighteen was a gift from her parents. and she traveled with her Aunt, Uncle, and their two daughters. The journey took about nine to ten months. She later married a man named Parkes, was a noted hostess in Nashville, Tennesse, and was an avid camper. Her diaries, household account books, and other miscellaneous archival matrial are held by the Tennesseee State Library and Archives.

Brief Itinerary:
Lenamay Green and her companions traveled from New York to Europe by steamer, landing in Ireland. They traveled through Ireland, Scotland, and London via train and small steamers and left London for France on a boat over the English Channel. After spending time traveling through France, they sailed for Egypt from Marseilles via steamer, a voyage that took about five and one half days. Once in Egypt, they traveled through Alexandria and Cairo by train. Ms. Green then headed for Israel from Egypt and traveled to Jaffa, Jerusalem, Jericho, and Bethlehem. The group then went on to visit Greece and Italy before heading north and west. They traveled to Austria, Germany,Denmark, Belgium, and Switzerland. Finally, the party began their journey back home going back through France and London and back to New York by steamer.

Brief History of the Text:
A Girl's Journey Through Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land by Lenamay Green was printed at the author's request by The M.E. Church South with J.D. Arbee as the agent in Nashville, TN in 1889. Ms. Green is credited with the copyright in 1889 as well. A reprint took place in 1896, again at the author's request, but with Barbee & Smith as agents. There are approxiamately 22 surviving copies in various libraries in the United States.
