WHAT IS NATIONAL HISTORY DAY?

NHD is a national system of support for history instruction, including curriculum materials and teaching tips designed for the secondary level.

NHD gives Junior/middle school and high school students an opportunity to research a topic over a period of several months, choosing their topic in relation to an annual national theme.

Students can explore and learn about historical issues, ideas, people, and events that interest them.

Beyond instructional support is a series of competitions at the regional, state, and national levels, in which students share what they have learned through entries linked to the annual theme.

The research stage fosters student academic achievement and intellectual growth, and both research and preparation for presentation foster critical thinking and problem‑solving skills that will be useful in their futures.

Participation supports teachers and students in meeting local, state, and particularly national educational standards.

Students can work alone or in groups of 2 to 5 for competition entries, and present their research in one of the following formats:

·        a PAPER (individual entries only)

·        a TABLE‑TOP EXHIBIT

·        a PERFORMANCE

·        a DOCUMENTARY PRESENTATION (video documentary, slide presentation, or non‑interactive computer program)

National History Day competitions have two divisions:

Junior division (grades 6‑8)           Senior division (grades 9‑12)
