There are two emphasis areas within the sociology major – 1) general sociology and 2) criminology. At total of 36 hours is required in either emphasis area. No grade below a C in any course is accepted for the major. All sociology majors in either emphasis area are required to complete the following three core courses
- SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology
- SOC 301 Sociological Methods
- SOC 310 Social and Cultural Theory
Sociology students taking the general emphasis must complete the sociology core (9 hours) and at least 27 additional hours from the list of all sociology electives. For the general emphasis student, any sociology course outside the sociology core counts as an elective. Six of the 27 hours of electives may be taken from the list of anthropology electives. At least 12 hours must be comprised of upper division courses (300 or 400 level).
Students taking the criminology emphasis must complete both the sociology core (9 hours) and the criminology core (9 hours). The criminology core consists of
- SOC 203 Criminal Justice System
- SOC 303 Crime and Deviance
- SOC 306 Delinquency and Juvenile Justice
Sociology/criminology majors must also complete a minimum of 18 hours of criminology electives. In the course list below and in the university catalogue, criminology electives are marked with an asterisk (*).
