From its roots in philosophy, modern psychology is at the center point of natural science and social science. Within the liberal arts tradition, students at Colorado State University-Pueblo learn to think like scientists about the complexities of behavior and develop skills that reflect psychology as both a science and an applied field. The Department of Psychology is committed to excellent teaching, outstanding research, and superior service to the university and the community. We strive to function as an inclusive department that respects differences among professors and students. We aim to offer an outstanding undergraduate psychology program that is recognized statewide with high achieving students and an active faculty.
Students can study such topics as memory and cognition, personality, counseling, drugs and behavior, child development, environmental psychology, evolutionary psychology, and sport psychology. A liberal arts education offers students with opportunities to develop skills in communication, critical thinking, and problem solving. Also, psychology majors develop skills in behavioral observation, statistical analysis, research design, and computer applications. In addition to pursuing post-graduate education, many of our graduates apply their knowledge of psychology to the development of career paths. Students’ preferred career paths are based on their own assessment of their abilities, their achievement, and their motivation. Careers with a bachelor’s degree in psychology fall into such areas as social service, personnel management, retail management, counseling centers, community colleges, and law enforcement.
Areas of Study
The Department of Psychology provides students with a general overview of the field of Psychology and offers options for completing a B.A. in psychology or a B.S. in psychology. While each degree option was developed to meet the particular interests of psychology majors, the required psychology courses are very similar and have several attractive features:
Similarities of the B.A. and B.S. Degrees in Psychology
- Study of psychological theory and research.
- Develop computer, statistical, and psychological application skills.
- Develop skills for effective written and oral communication in psychology.
Focus of the B.A. in Psychology Option
In addition to the required psychology courses, students in the Psychology B.A. option must complete one of the three foreign language options listed on the psychology advising sheet (please see below).
Focus of the B.S. in Psychology Option
In addition to the required psychology courses, students in the Psychology B.S. option must complete 8 credits in the natural sciences or math (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, or Physics) beyond their general education courses. EXHP 162 and EXHP 162L cannot be used to satisfy the additional science requirement. The Psychology B.S. option provides an excellent background for graduate studies in psychology.
